OTOBI is the largest furniture manufacturing company in Bangladesh. It is the number one furniture brand in Bangladesh. Mr. Nitun Kundu established OTOBI in 1975.
Nitun Kundu was born in 1935 in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka in 1959 and got first class with the 1st position. His dream was to become a teacher of Fine Arts College. But, unfortunately, he was denied for the position in spite of his brilliant results in painting and sculpting. After that, Nitun Kundu visualized the idea of employing his creativity in 1975 with a small investment. He set up a small workshop in a tiny tin-shed. In this area, he manufactured decorative items like coat pins, crests, cups, trophies etc. and next he started manufacturing of different types of metal furniture. At that time, his monthly turnover was about BDT 5,000.
In 1978 in parallel with manufacturing metal furniture, he had opened a showroom in New Elephant Road at which all kinds of metal furniture were sold. With the increasing demand for OTOBI’s furniture, Nitun Kundu predicts the future of his furniture business. He engaged lot of technicians, industrial designers, engineers in his creative workshop.
By 1983 a big factory was set up in Mirpur, Dhaka and after that he built a own multi-storied factory at Shyampur, Dhaka. Now, the factory is standing at 300,000 sft. is completely operational with latest machinery to produce a wide variety of the furniture.
Now, Otobi Furniture is the market leader in branded furniture manufacturing industry. Otobi’s furniture has office, household, and hospital furniture as well as specialized furniture like kitchen cabinet, built-in cabinet and workstation. Otobi employs about 5000 employees in its manufacturing plants, 18 showrooms and 530 dealers. Otobi’s vision is to become a foremost international brand and its current mission is to rule Asia-Pacific furniture manufacturing industries by 2020.
Otobi is selling its products in Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Singapore and in some European countries. In India, there are some good dealers of Otobi.
After death of Nitun Kundu, Otobi is slight behind than its goal due to lack of perfect leadership. But now it is going ahead again. It has a plan to enter into the capital market of Bangladesh to make it public limited company from limited company.
