Acne and Nutrition: How to Get Rid of Acne

Milk and chocolate are the leaders among products that provoke the appearance of acne and rashes. Establishing a skincare routine can avoid serious problems, however, proper nutrition is the first step to healthy skin. From a certain category of people, you can hear something like “Don’t eat a lot of chocolate, because you’ll get acne!”. Although at the moment, there is no scientific basis and reasonable research that would definitively put a plus on this issue.

Milk and acne

Now milk is hated and blamed for many aesthetic and physical problems (acne, puffiness, bloating, weight gain). And only Cleopatra was not afraid of anything and took a bath with donkey milk. And ancient wealthy women washed their hair and skin with milk. 

In the first case, they believed that it cleans and whitens the skin well, and nourishes and adds shine to the hair. Even today, milk is a popular cosmetic ingredient when it comes to dry and very dry skin care. So why is it good to “apply” milk to wounds, but from the inside the effect is the opposite?

Milk also contains IGF-1 (we wrote about its effect above) + it contains the hormone dihydrotestosterone and growth factors. Therefore, some studies link the appearance of acne with the consumption of milk. 

But do not rush to buy milk with a lower percentage of fat, especially skimmed. Because the hormones responsible for the development of acne are less (or not at all) dissolved in fat, which means that they are more active. And the result, of course, on the face.

Chocolates and Acne – Is there a Connection?

There are currently no authoritative studies that describe a strong link between chocolate and acne. On the contrary, the cocoa favorite of millions has a low glycemic index due to the high content of fats that prevent the absorption of sugar.

Often, people independently draw conclusions from their own observations, in particular, the most popular is the history of menstruation (premenstrual syndrome, to be more precise) in women.

When girls are drawn to sweets, especially chocolates, holiday pimples appear. However,hormonal swings are underestimated by most, and chocolate becomes the #1 offender.

An interesting fact about the female body: the condition of the skin worsens during ovulation, before menstruation.

It’s all about the hormones that the corpus luteum begins to actively produce, which causes pimples and rashes. And the level of the “hormone of beautiful skin” – estrogen, on the contrary, decreases.

Now, about the men. There is a study that shows that chocolate with 100% cocoa beans causes acne in men. But believe it or not, it’s up to you – only 13 men participated in the study. A questionable base, to be honest.

Humanity needs new experiments to clarify the connection between acne and chocolate. Most of what we have now dates back to the 1970s, or was funded by the Chocolate Manufacturers Association of the USA (everyone understands what the sales result should be, right?). They lack objectivity.

One thing we know for sure, diet and eating habits have an effect on the condition of the skin. And products with a reduced fat content, starchy, grain, and sweet food – definitely will not add smoothness and radiance to the skin.

The gut and the brain, and with it the hormonal system, have a very close and interdependent connection! Therefore, it is not only healthy but also beautiful to eat a varied and healthy diet.

How to Properly & What Care After The Course

If we are talking about a conscious attitude towards ourselves and want to save time/money, then with the appearance of acne, inflammation, and increased secretion of sebum, it is necessary to consult a qualified dermatologist or cosmetologist.

It sounds uneconomical, of course, because doctor’s appointments and future procedures and home care are money. And squeezing and smearing pimples with toothpaste is always at hand. Please don’t do that!
